World no.1 Novak Djokovic is through to the Mutua Madrid Open semi-finals with ninth seed Marin Cilic pulling out ahead of their quarter-final match on Friday due to food poisoning.

It will be Novak’s 62nd ATP Masters 1000 semi-final.

“Dear fans, Mutua Madrid Open organizers, Novak, I am sorry to announce that I must withdraw from today’s match. I have had a terrible night dealing with a case of food poisoning. I am extremely disappointed to have my time in Madrid end in this way. Thank you for the support,” Cilic announced on Twitter.

The first semi-final is scheduled on Saturday at 16:00 CET.

Novak will take on Dominic Thiem (AUT, 5) who defeated Roger Federer (SUI, 4) in three sets, 3-6, 7-6, 6-4.

In the other half of the draw, Rafael Nadal (ESP, 2) faces Stefanos Tsitsipas (GRE, 8).
