Andy Murray has withdrawn from the Mutua Madrid Open ahead of his third round match against world no.1 Novak Djokovic on Thursday.
“Unfortunately, Andy Murray is unable to take to the Manolo Santana Stadium due to illness,” read a statement on the Madrid Open social media account.
Novak and his long-time rival were supposed to meet for the first time in more than 5 years. Djokovic leads the pair’s H2H series 25-11, including 5-1 on clay.
The top seed and three-time former titlist goes on to play Hubert Hurkacz (POL, 12, H2H record 3-0) for a spot in the Mutua Madrid Open semi-finals. Hurkacz upset Dusan Lajovic (Serbia, Q) in straight sets.
