No.1 seed Novak Djokovic dominated Yannick Hanfmann 6-3, 6-3 to reach quarter-finals of the Geneva ATP 250 tournament at the Tennis Club de Genève, Parc des Eaux-Vives, on Wednesday afternoon.
Djokovic was serving for the first set of his opening match at the Gonet Geneva Open against the German when play was suspended for an hour due to rain.
The players left the court with Novak serving at 5-3, Deuce. Upon resumption, the Serbian saved a break point before holding to win the set 6-3.
Though Hanfmann raced to a 3-0 lead in the second set, his game fell apart after failing to convert opportunity for 4-0. Novak won six games in a row to seal the win on his 37th birthday.
“The key was the birthday,” Djokovic said with a laugh. “The birthday probably wouldn’t be the same if I didn’t win the match, but it’s nice to be here for the first time at this tournament, with my family coming here to support as well. I’m getting some really quality time on the court, but also off the court.”
Novak will face Tallon Griekspoor (NED, 6) in the quarter-finals on Thursday.
