Top seed Novak Djokovic opened his 2014 Wimbledon campaign with a 6-0, 6-1, 6-4 victory over Andrey Golubev on Centre Court on Monday.
The match lasted one hour and 28 minutes.
Novak made a strong start. In his first match since the Roland Garros final, he won the first 11 games before Golubev managed to get on the scoreboard. The 27-year-old Serbian broke in the ninth game of the third set and wrapped up his 39th win at the All England Club.
“It was a great start, especially in the first two sets,” the 2011 champion said. “Credit to Andrey for coming back in the third, but I can’t be happier with the performance. It’s never easy coming into a tournament, and you can never underestimate any opponent. But I started extremely well and played a very good game.”
Match statistics: aces (7-1), double faults (0-3), winners (34-15), unforced errors (14-22), total points won (92-57).
Novak will play against world no.38 Radek Stepanek on Wednesday. The Czech eliminated Pablo Cuevas in straight sets.
It will be the 12th career encounter between the two, Djokovic leads their H2H 10-1.
The Belgrade native won the Championships title in 2011 (d. Nadal) and finished runner-up last year (l.to Murray).
