Fourth-seeded Novak Djokovic advanced to the third round of the French Open with a straight sets win over Ukranian qualifier Sergiy Stakhovsky, 6-3, 6-4, 6-1 in 2 hours and 4 minutes. The second round match was suspended on Thursday due to bad light after 89 minutes of play, Djokovic was leading by two sets.
Novak clinched the opening game of the match with a great forehand winner. At 40-30 for Stakhovsky in the third game Djokovic won three points in a row to get the first break of the match for 4-1 lead. The 22-year old had break points in the sixth and eighth game, but the Ukranian held. World no.4 got the set 6-3.
Stakhovsky started the second set in great style. He broke Djokovic’s service in the second game and then held to increase his lead to 3-0. The Ukranian was leading 4-1 when Nole won five games in a row, breaking his opponent’s service twice, in the seventh and ninth game to take the set 6-4.
The match was continued on Friday, and the Serb was anxious to wrap it up quickly.
Djokovic spent 35 minutes on court. He made three breaks for 5-0 lead. Number four seed was serving for the match when Stakhovsky broke for 5-1. Novak earned two break-match points in the seventh game and capitalised on the second to close the match 6-1.
Nole will face Philipp Kohlschreiber (29) in the third round. The German defeated 2003 French Open champion Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero in five sets.
