After reaching quarter-final in Monte Carlo two weeks ago, Novak continues his clay court season at the second ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event on clay in 2017, the Mutua Madrid Open (May 7- May 14).
The defending champion is no.2 seed and has a first-round BYE. He will open his campaign at La Caja Mágica against Spanish wild card Nicolas Almagro (H2H 4-0).
Novak’s potential rivals in the later stages of the tournament are:
3rd round: Gael Monfils (FRA, 15), Gilles Simon (FRA), Feliciano Lopez (ESP)
Quarter-finals: Kei Nishikori (JPN, 6), Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (FRA, 10), David Ferrer (ESP)
Semi-finals: Rafael Nadal (ESP, 4), Milos Raonic (CAN, 5), David Goffin (BEL, 9)
Andy Murray (GBR, 1), Stan Wawrinka (SUI, 4), Marin Cilic (CRO, 7), Dominic Thiem (AUT, 8) … are in the top half of the draw and Djokovic can’t meet them before the final.
Novak lifted the trophy twice in the capital of Spain, in 2011 and 2016. Last year he beat Murray in the final (6-2, 3-6, 6-3).
