After reaching the final at the 2022 Serbia Open in Belgrade last week, world no.1 Novak Djokovic continues his clay court season at the Mutua Madrid Open, an ATP Masters 1000 event, taking place from May 1 to May 8.

The Serbian star is no.1 seed and will open his campaign at La Caja Mágica in the second round against Gael Monfils (FRA, ATP #21).

Novak’s potential rivals in the later stages of the tournament are:

3rd round: Denis Shapovalov (CAN, 14), Dominic Thiem (AUT, PR), Andy Murray (GBR, WC)
Quarter-finals: Casper Ruud (NOR, 5), Hubert Hurkacz (POL, 12), Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (ESP)
Semi-finals: Rafael Nadal (ESP, 3), Carlos Alcaraz (ESP, 7)

Alexander Zverev (GER, 2), Stefanos Tsitsipas (GRE, 4), Andrey Rublev (RUS, 6) … are in the bottom half of the draw and Novak can’t meet them before the final.

Djokovic lifted the trophy three times in the capital of Spain, in 2011, 2016, and 2019, when he last played. The tournament was not held in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Novak skipped the 2021 edition, so he has no ATP points to defend.
