Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer are the top three players on tour heading into Wimbledon 2011. Their ranking points on the latest ATP Ranking List as of Monday, June 13, are as follows:
1. Rafael Nadal (Spain) 12,070
2. Novak Djokovic (Serbia) 12,005
3. Roger Federer (Switzerland) 9,230
The Spaniard and the best Serbian tennis player are just 65 points apart.
But in addition to being the defending champion at Wimbledon, Nadal is defending 2,000 points and can only stay at the same total.
Right behind is Djokovic, a semifinalist last year (720 points) whose amazing run this year has resulted in a 41-1 record and seven ATP titles (including 1 Grand Slam and 4 Masters). His winning streak ended-up in the semi finals of the French Open.
Novak is close to becoming the 25th man since the rankings began in 1973 to be ranked no. 1. He missed an opportunity at Roland Garros, but now he has got another chance to get onto top position.
Roger Federer is third but can’t move up two spots no matter what happens at Wimbledon.
Andy Murray is following them in position no.4 with 6,855 points.
The top four seeds are the heavy favorites to lift the Wimbledon 2011 trophy. In this season, Novak has been playing outstandingly and playing the best tennis of his life. Murray is also playing well, he entered into the Australian Open final, French Open semi final, and defended his AEGON Championships title. Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer are playing consistent tennis this season. Rafa has lost four finals to Novak in 2011 and the Swiss has won only one title this year.
We all know that Nole’s ambition is to grab the no. 1 spot and his dream is to win the Wimbledon.
There are various scenarios for our Champ to get to the top of the rankings for the first time in his career.
Should Nadal not win the title, Djokovic would be number one under ALL scenarios.
Novak can move to top spot if he reaches Wimbledon final, even if Rafa defends the title.
Nole’s best result at the Championships is semi finals (2007 and 2010).
Wimbledon begins on Monday, June 20, and concludes with the men’s singles final on July 3.
The draw will be made on Friday at 11am CET.
