Novak failed to pass his first obstacle at the Mutua Madrid Open Masters 1000 event in the Spanish capital. Italian Matteo Arnaldi, ranked 44th in the world, caused an upset in the second round by defeating the fourth seed 6-3, 6-4.

Novak’s Indian Wells campaign ended unexpectedly early, as he suffered a second-round defeat in his first match at the tournament. Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp, ranked 85th in the world, pulled off a major upset, defeating the five-time champion 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.
