Novak returned to The Boodles tournament, the traditional Wimbledon warm-up event at Stoke Park in Buckinghamshire, to finalise preparations for the defence of his Championships title.
Djokovic clinched his first win on grass this year, beating Richard Gasquet 6-4, 6-7 (8), 10-8 on Thursday.
Novak made a confident start, breaking in the opening game of the match. It was enough for the Serbian star to take the first set.
Both players were enjoying entertaining the crowd. Games went with serve in the second set, the Frenchman prevailed in a tie-breaker to level.
The 28-year-old Belgrade native had a 2-5 deficit in a super tie-breaker, but managed to come back and seal it 10-8.
In his second match on the surface, Novak lost to young German hope Alexander Zverev on Friday, 4-6, 3-6.
