Second-seeded Novak Djokovic booked his place in the quarter-finals in Shanghai with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over world no.99 German qualifier Rainer Schuettler in 1 hour and 24 minutes.
Djokovic broke his opponent’s service twice, in the first and seventh game for 5-2 lead. The 22-year old Serb was serving for the set, but he made two double faults and handed Schuettler a chance to break which he used. At 5-4 Novak fired an ace on his first set point to take the first set 6-4 in 43 minutes.
World no.4 made a break in the long third game of the second set, capitalising on his fifth opportunity. Just like in the first set, Novak grabbed a second break in the seventh game and then closed the set and match 6-2 with two aces.
Djokovic served 5 aces, both players made 3 double faults.
Nole hit 21 winners to Schuettler’s 9, and made 19 unforced errors, 6 less than his opponent.
The Serb capitalised on 4 of his 9 break points, while the German converted the only chance he had.
Novak will play against no.8 seed Gilles Simon for a place in the semi-finals of the Shanghai ATP Masters 1000 Presented by Rolex (hard, $5,250,000). The Frenchman defeated Czech Tomas Berdych in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.
Simon and Djokovic have met four times, Nole leads 3-1.
