Today was a bad day at the office for Nole.
World no.5 Spaniard David Ferrer beat the Serbian top seed 6-3, 6-1 in 75 minutes to advance into the semi-finals at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London on Wednesday.
Nole couldn’t find his rhythm throughout the match. He made a lot of unforced errors and the Spanish no.2 gave one of his best performances in 2011.
Ferrer made two breaks in each set for his second win in Group A.
“All the credit to Ferrer, he played great match,” said Novak. “It was the worst match I’ve played this season so far definitely. So many unforced errors. I’m not playing well – that’s a fact. At this level you know that you have to deliver your best tennis. I wasn’t on my best in the first match, but I managed to kind of get into the rhythm in the second set. This match, I have no words to explain. Nothing was going really for me. Nothing was going well.”
”He was playing smart, changing rhythm. You always can kind of expect and predict what he’s going to come up on the court with. He doesn’t drop with the level that much. He’s always focused, always fighting for each point. He’s a great player. He deserved to win.”
Nole will play against his fellow-Serbian Janko Tipsarevic on Friday. The world no.9 was the first alternate this week. He replaced injured no.3 Andy Murray.
Tomas Berdych defeated Tipsarevic in a thriller earlier today. The seventh-seeded Czech prevailed 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 to clinch his first victory in Group A.
Singles Group A qualification scenarios after the completion of the 2nd round of the event’s group stage:
1) Regardless of score, if Novak defeats Tipsarevic and Ferrer defeats Berdych, then Ferrer wins the group and Nole qualifies 2nd.
2) Regardless of score, if Tipsarevic defeats Novak and Ferrer defeats Berdych, then Ferrer wins the group and Nole qualifies 2nd.
3) Regardless of score, if Tipsarevic defeats Novak and Berdych defeats Ferrer, then Berdych wins the group and Ferrer qualifies 2nd.
4) If Novak defeats Tipsarevic in 2 sets and Berdych defeats Ferrer in 2 sets, then Ferrer wins the group and Berdych qualifies 2nd.
5) If Novak defeats Tipsarevic in 2 sets and Berdych defeats Ferrer in 3 sets, then Ferrer wins the group and Nole qualifies 2nd.
6) If Novak defeats Tipsarevic in 3 sets and Berdych defeats Ferrer in 2 sets, then Ferrer wins the group and Berdych qualifies 2nd.
7) If Novak defeats Tipsarevic in 3 sets and Berdych defeats Ferrer in 3 sets, then Ferrer wins the group and Berdych qualifies 2nd.
