World number three Novak Djokovic started his Cincinnati Masters campaign with a straight sets win over his good friend and compatriot world no.47 Viktor Troicki 6-3, 7-5 in 1 hour and 40 minutes.
It was his 100th win at ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments.
Djokovic played better than his opponent in the first set. A break in the fourth game was enough for Novak to take it 6-3 in 35 minutes.
A double fault from Djokovic saw him fail to capitalise on a game point in the second game of the second set and Troicki went on to break when the younger Serb hit a backhand into the net. Novak then broke Troicki’s service twice, in the third and fifth games, to go up 3-2, but the 24-year-old made his second break in the match to level the result. Nole made a crucial break in the eleventh game and then closed the set and match 7-5.
Match statistics: aces (3-5), double faults (6-5), winners (22-16), unforced errors (35-36), total points won (80-64)
Djokovic will face world no.37 David Nalbandian in the third round. The Argentine advanced when no.19 in the ATP rankings American John Isner retired due to ankle injury.
Novak and Nalbandian have met four times, Nole leads 3-1.
