No.2 seed at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, Novak Djokovic, defeated no.14 seed Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka 6-4, 6-1 tonight in the third round of the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament.

Novak wrapped up the victory in 1 hour and 34 minutes to improve to a 34-0 this season.

After both players failed to convert several break points, Novak finally used his chance in the tenth game of the opening set for 6-4.

The best Serbian tennis player made a double break in the second set and consolidated them for a convincing 5-0 lead. The world no.2 closed the set and match 6-1.

Djokovic capitalised on 3 of 9 break points, while Wawrinka didn’t use any of his six chances for break.

“Today I had a tough opponent and I was aware of his qualities on clay. We played over an hour in the first set. I managed to get that crucial break, and from then on I played better,” Nole said after the match.

Novak will face no.5 seed Robin Soderling for a place in the semi-finals. The Swede beat Spaniard Nicolas Almagro 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

Djokovic and Soderling have met six times, Nole leads 5-1. The only match Soderling won was their last match, at the ATP World Tour Finals in London in 2009.

“The rounds and opponents are getting tougher, so I have to get ready for that,” Novak said about the upcoming challenge.
