Novak is the 2022 Astana Open champion!
World no. 7 Novak Djokovic added another trophy to his remarkable collection, beating no.3 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3, 6-4 in 75 minutes in the Astana Open final.
Novak has dominated the Greek throughout their careers, and it was not anything different in this championship match. He has played at a really high level this tournament and he put on yet another magnificent display on Sunday.
Novak broke once in each set and converted his third match point with a backhand winner. The Belgrade native also won 87 per cent of his first-serve points and did not face a break point.
“I could not ask for a better re-start of the season. I’m super-pumped and motivated to end the season as well as I have done these past couple of weeks. I’m just very grateful and blessed to be able to play this well at this stage of my life,” Nole said. “You know, 35 is not 25. But I think the experience, probably, in these kinds of matches and big occasions helps as well to approach mentally in the right way.”
Match statistics: aces (1-1), double faults (0-2), winners (15-12), unforced errors (7-25), total points won (58-39).
It is Novak’s fourth title of the year, after Rome, Wimbledon and Tel Aviv, in his fifth final of the season.
With the triumph, the Serbian star backed up last week’s Tel Aviv championship run with a second consecutive title and 90th overall, and qualified for the Nitto ATP Finals.
Novak is heading to Paris next, for the Rolex Paris Masters, where he captured a record-extending sixth crown in 2021 (def. Medvedev 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the championship match).
The final ATP Masters 1000 event of the season will take place from October 31 to November 6.
