The Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic continued his smooth progress at the BNP Paribas Open, advancing to the quarter-finals at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tennis event with a 6-0, 6-1 win over fellow Serbian Viktor Troicki in just 66 minutes on Wednesday in Indian Wells.
The 23-year-old Belgrade native opened the match with a love service hold and made a triple break for 6-0.
Troicki saved a break point in the second game of the second set with a forehand winner and went on to hold with an ace for his first game to the delight of the crowd. Nole broke his opponent’s serve two more times for 5-1 lead. He saved two break points before wrapping up the win using his fifth match point.
Another easy victory for the world no.3 who has dropped just six games so far this week and has enjoyed a bagel set in each of his three matches at the tournament.
“I don’t think I’m playing incredible tennis,” said Novak in his postmatch interview. “I think I’m playing really, really solid and getting a lot of balls back into the court and making my opponent play an extra shot… I think he had a very bad match in general. But I was very solid, and I keep on playing well, so this is what makes me happy.”
Djokovic fired 1 ace to Troicki’s three, and served four double faults to Troicki’s five.
The younger Serb won 73 per cent of points when he landed his first serve.
Novak hit 12 winners to Viktor’s 8, and made 13 unforced errors, while Troicki had 26.
He next faces world no.21 Richard Gasquet. The Frenchman upset eighth seeded American Andy Roddick 6-3, 7-6. Djokovic won three of four matches they played.
Nole and Viktor joined forces against Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi (Pakistan) and Rohan Bopanna (India) in the doubles quarter-finals. They lost 1-6, 6-7(5).
