Serbia in Davis Cup World Group after beating Uzbekistan 5-0!

Serbia defeated Uzbekistan 5-0 in the Davis Cup World Group play-off and will play in the World Group for the third year in a row.

Nenad Zimonjic and Janko Tipsarevic won the deciding third point for the team in doubles, beating Denis Istomin and Farrukh Dustov 6-2, 6-3, 6-2.

Janko Tipsarevic and Viktor Troicki won the first two points in singles for Serbia on Friday, and the two dead rubbers were played on Sunday.

Troicki beat Murad Inoyatov despite the foot injury, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, and Ilija Bozoljac beat Vaja Uzakov 6-1, 6-4.

Captain Bogdan Obradovic congratulated the players:

‘I want to thank my team for a brilliant performance, the Serbian Tennis Federation for being there for us all the time and the fans for turning up throughout the weekend to support us’.

Obradovic said he hoped for a home tie in front of a full house in the first round of next year’s competition. ’Our next match is going to be the first step towards the end goal, which is to win the Davis Cup and I am confident we are going to be genuine contenders for the trophy’, he added.

The draw for the Davis Cup World Group is taking place in Geneva (Switzerland) on Wednesday. Serbia is not seeded, which means there’s possibility that the team again gets one of the strongest teams in the world. For two years in a row Serbia wasn’t lucky and had to play against Russia and Spain away.

If we draw Spain, Russia, Israel, Czech Republic or Germany, Serbia will be host, if we get to play against USA, Argentina or Croatia, the additional draw will decide the host.
