Novak's US Open title defence came to a halt on Sunday when the Serb retired from his fourth-round match against Stan Wawrinka. The Swiss led, 6-4, 7-5, 2-1, when the top seed stopped due to a left shoulder injury. They were facing off for the first time since the 2016 US Open final.
Novak defeated the big hitting Argentine 6-4, 7-6 (3), 6-1 to progress in two hours and 15 minutes under the Arthur Ashe Stadium roof. Next up for the top seed is Denis Kudla (USA, ATP #111).
Novak started his title defence in a strong fashion by beating Roberto Caraballes Baena in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, 6-4. He next faces Juan Ignacio Londero (ARG, ATP #56).
