Three-time champion Novak Djokovic made a fast start at the US Open on Monday, where he moved past Frenchman Alexandre Muller 6-0, 6-2, 6-3 to reach the second round.
The match on Arthur Ashe Stadium lasted one hour and 34 minutes.
Novak broke seven times from 12 opportunities and suffered one break of serve, having won 84% of points on his first serve. He was 20/23 on net approaches (87%).
“The first set I started tremendously well off the box,” said Djokovic in his on-court interview. “We started quite late. There was a ceremony between matches and I knew that we might have a late start, but nevertheless I was excited to come out on the court. It’s been a couple of years, and to come out here in front of you guys is always an honour and a pleasure here on Arthur Ashe.”
Last year, Nole did not participate in the US Open because of vaccination status.
Match statistics: aces (6-4), double faults (5-4), winners (32-11), unforced errors (23-17), total points won (77-50).
Novak will next play against world no.76 Bernabe Zapata Miralles of Spain. It will be their first career meeting.
Djokovic is guaranteed his return to World no.1 in the ATP Rankings after the US Open, on Monday, September 11.
