Top-seeded Novak Djokovic closed out a routine 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 win over world no.79 Diego Schwartzman of Argentina to advance into the second round of the 2014 US Open on Monday night.
The 2011 champion converted seven of his 12 break points and saved four of the six he faced during the one hour, 37-minute victory, improving to a 40-6 record on the season.
“I’m very pleased,” the world no.1 from Serbia said after the win. “It’s never easy to start a US Open smoothly. I thought I hit the ball very well throughout the whole match. Diego is a talented player. He is very quick on the court.”
Match statistics: aces (7-1), double faults (3-4), winners (24-10), unforced errors (27-24), total points won (91-55).
Novak will next face world no.81 Paul-Henri Mathieu who battled past Gilles Muller in five sets. Djokovic leads the Frenchman 5-1 in H2H meetings.
The match is scheduled on Thursday about 3:00pm local time (9:00pm CET).
“I’m sure we’ll both be fresh and motivated to play. He’s a very solid player from the baseline, but I’ll focus on myself and hope to do as well as I did tonight,” said Nole.
