Serbia is through to the quarter-finals of the Davis Cup as one of the two best runners-up. The 2010 champions will meet Kazakhstan on Wednesday, December 1.
Dusan Lajovic gave Serbia a 1-0 lead in their tie against Austria on Friday at the Davis Cup Finals, beating Gerald Melzer 7-6 (5), 3-6, 7-5. Novak Djokovic backed up the win, toppling Dennis Novak 6-3, 6-2.
Novak raised his level as the match went on to beat Borna Coric 7-6 (11), 6-3. For a spot in the ATP 500 tournament last four, the top seed will play Italian lucky loser Lorenzo Sonego (ATP #41) on Friday.
Novak is through to the second round at the Erste Bank Open, following a 7-6 (6), 6-3 victory over his friend and compatriot Filip Krajinovic in one hour and 58 minutes. The 2007 Vienna champion goes on to face Borna Coric (3-0 H2H).
