Novak begins W&S Open title campaign with straight sets win in his first match since February
World no.1 made a winning start to his Western & Southern Open title campaign on Monday when he overcame a spirited performance from qualifier Ricardas Berankis 7-6, 6-4 for a place in the third round. Novak next plays ATP #55, American Tennys Sandgren (H2H 2-0).

The 2020 Western & Southern Open is the first tournament to be played since the ATP Tour was suspended in early March. It will take place at Flushing Meadows (August 22-28) without fans in attendance.

Novak toppled Alexander Zverev 4-0, 1-4, 4-2, but that was not enough for him to reach the final, as he needed to beat the German in straight sets. After impressive Round Robin performances from both Filip Krajinovic and Dominic Thiem, the two met in the Adria Tour final. The Austrian recorded a 4-3 (2), 2-4, 4-2 triumph to become the champion.

Novak returned to the court in style on Saturday afternoon at the Adria Tour, beating his friend and compatriot Viktor Troicki in straight sets 4-1, 4-1 in just 37 minutes. In the evening session match, Novak lost to Filip Krajinovic 4-2, 2-4, 1-4.
