Novak cruises past Popyrin in Tokyo opener
Novak picked up his first win in Tokyo cruising past Alexei Popyrin 6-4, 6-2 to reach the second round of the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships. He plays Japanese wild card Go Soeda on Wednesday.

The longest-running ATP Tour event in Asia is taking place at the Ariake Colosseum from September 30 to October 6. Making his debut in Tokyo, the top-seeded Novak will open campaign against Alexei Popyrin (Q).
ATP Cup groups announced
The official tournament draw for the inaugural ATP Cup (3-12 January 2020) was held at the Sydney Opera House on Monday. Top seed Serbia, led by world no.1 Novak Djokovic, will play at the Pat Rafter Arena in Brisbane in Group A with France, South Africa and one more country that will qualify on the second entry deadline of 13 November.
Defending US Open champion Novak retires from R16 match
Novak's US Open title defence came to a halt on Sunday when the Serb retired from his fourth-round match against Stan Wawrinka. The Swiss led, 6-4, 7-5, 2-1, when the top seed stopped due to a left shoulder injury. They were facing off for the first time since the 2016 US Open final.

Novak defeated the big hitting Argentine 6-4, 7-6 (3), 6-1 to progress in two hours and 15 minutes under the Arthur Ashe Stadium roof. Next up for the top seed is Denis Kudla (USA, ATP #111).

Top seed and defending champion recorded a 7-6 (2), 6-1 victory over Lucas Pouille to book a place in the Western & Southern Open last four. For a spot in the championship match, Novak will face Daniil Medvedev (RUS, 9).
